Hi, I’m Jenna!

I am an associate professor of library science at the University of Central Missouri. I have a Ph.D. from the University of Missouri’s School of Information Science and Learning Technologies (SISLT), a Masters of Arts in Education with an emphasis in Learning Technologies from New Mexico State University and a Masters of Arts in Information and Library Resources (MIRLS) from the University of Arizona’s School of Information. My BA is from Prescott College in Prescott, Arizona with a double major in Cultural Studies and Visual Arts.

Teaching. I teach graduate courses about the organization of information, action research, information resources and technology in libraries at the University of Central Missouri. I have also taught as an adjunct at the University of Missouri, New Mexico State University (Dona Ana & Alamogordo), and the University of New Mexico (Gallup).

Research. I research within the intersection of information access, educational technology and policy. I use a cultural studies lens to construct the lived experience of people who use information for learning. My research has examined the concept of control and disruption as present in decisions made in the design and management of etextbooks, digital repositories, learning management systems, library management systems and internet filtering. Intellectual freedom is at the core of all of my research.

My research centers around the following questions:

  • How does technology shape how people access information for learning?
  • How does technology impact the behavior of the people using it for learning?
  • What can information professionals do to improve access to information in these systems?

The broad scope of this work has explored responses and perspectives on issues of policy within educational and information environments. This includes control, collaboration, decision-making, participation and choices.

Instructional design. After working as an instructional designer for 8 years at the University of Missouri, I developed a strong background in instructional design, educational theory, educational technology and usability. I continue to work as a freelance instructional designer for special projects. Instructional design has taught me about what it means to learn in the digital world!

Book indexing. I am also a trained indexer and create book indexes for scholarly texts. I would love to index your book! Please email me jkammerATucmo.edu.
